2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo

After BMW updated the 3 Series sedan and wagon, it was just a
matter of time before the same upgrades were features on the
Gran Turismo version of the series. The BMW 3 Series Gran
Turismo was only introduced recently in 2013 as a smaller
version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo.

The new facelift is actually the first upgrade the model has
received. Since its debut, the model has managed to create a
niche albeit at a slow pace across the world. Many of its
enthusiasts love its excellent sporting character that blends
in the functionality of the 3-Series Touring, Sporting
character of the 3 series sedan and the elegant character of
the 3 Series coupe.  The Bavarian manufacturer has tweaked
its sporting character for 2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo in a
bid to attract even more customers. Read along to find out

2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo Exterior

On the exterior, the 3 Series Gran Turismo adopts many styling
cues from the 3-Series sedan and wagon. However, unlike the
sedan and wagon, the GT rides on the extended wheelbase adopted
from the China-exclusive sedan. The exterior of the new model
has been refined for 2017. It now features a matte-chrome
exterior trim.

At the front, the biggest change is the new LED headlights
which are hosted in new clusters. The automaker has also added
LED fog lights and modified the bumper. At the rear, there are
new LED taillights with new graphics which make the rear look
more aggressive.

Just like the outgoing model, customers will have an array of
exterior colors to choose from.  There are two new
metallic finishes while the M Sport trim will be offered with
an exclusive Estoril Blue.  For a more personalized
appeal, buyers will chose various options offered in the
“Individual Program”. The model rides on 19-inch wheels.

The cabin has also been greatly redesigned for more premium
comfort and convenience.  The rear passengers get to
experience plenty of legroom compared to the standard 3 Series
sedan due to the GT’s 4.33 inches longer wheelbase. Passengers
also get to sit around two inches higher compared to the wagon
and sedan.

The center stack features a chrome surround. There is also a
chrome trim on the console controls, wood inserts and an option
for different color themes for the cabin. Leather is the
standard upholstery material.

Tech-wise, the model comes with the new version of the
automaker’s navigation system which features clear menu items
displayed in a tile-based layout. Connectivity for Smartphones
has been enhanced by the introduction of inductive charging.

The GT offers a very large cargo space of 18.36 cubic feet.
This space expands to 56.5 cubic feet upon folding flat the
rear seats. Other features are similar to those of the 3-Series
sedan which as you would expect make the cabin look and feel
very luxurious.

Engine Specs and performance

The Gran Turismo features the same lineup of engines like the
standard 3 Series models. The model comes with a number of both
petrol and diesel engines. In the U.S.A., only two drive-trains
will be offered.  They include the 330i which replaces the
328i and 340i which replaces the 335i. The 330i is powered by a
turbocharged 2.0 L, 4-cylinder engine which is capable of 252
hp while the 340i is equipped with a 3.0 L turbo 6-cylinder
mill which pumps out 326 hp.

Other markets will have a turbocharged 2.0 L, engine capable of
producing 184 horses.

Diesel engines will also be offered in other markets. Five
diesel drive-trains will be on offer. All the diesel mills have
a displacement of 2.0 liters: however, they are differently
tuned to produce different levels of power.

The engine on the base 318d produces 150 hp and 190 horses on
the 320d trim. Moving up, the same engine is tweaked to produce
224 horses on the 325d. On the 330d, the engine produces 258 hp
while on the top-of the range 335d, the engine produces 313

The engines will be offered either with a 6-speed manual
transmission or with an 8-speed automatic transmission system.
xDrive AWD will also be offered in some trims. Some models will
also feature the Septronic automatic transmission system.

Price and release date

Sales of the 2017 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo commence this
summer in Europe. The model will arrive in North America in the
last quarter of 2016.

The price will not vary significantly from the current models.
The current model starts at $ 43,995 and can rise to over $
50,000 in higher trims.

As at now, the model does not have a competitor. However, that
is set to change soon when Audi brings back the Audi A5
Sportback. To beat Audi in this front, BMW will have to work
extra hard. In fact, BMW launched the 3 Series Gran Turismo to
rival the A5 Sportback.
